Institute of Mathematics and its Applications

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is the scholarly and professional association for mathematics and its applications in the United Kingdom. They were founded in 1964 and were formed by the Royal Charter in 1990 when they were awarded the ability to confer the Chartered Mathematician certification. They also confer the Chartered Scientist and Chartered Mathematics Teacher designations. They presently have roughly 5,000 members, approximately 40% of whom work in education (from elementary schools to universities), with the majority of the rest working in commercial, industrial, and governmental organizations.
